TIP OF THE WEEK Searching Online Newspapers Searching for ancestors in newspapers on sites such as GenealogyBank and the Google News Archive? These tips, from the Family Tree University course Newspaper Research 101: Find Your Ancestors in American News Sources, can help you find the folks you're looking for:
- Study the newspaper website's search tips and take any tutorials the site offers.
- Narrow your search to the city where your ancestor lived or to the newspaper covering the area, and to a date range covering the lifespan or event you're researching.
- Try alternate spellings of your ancestor's name, as well as any nicknames he or she used. If the site allows it, use wildcard characters to catch misspellings.
- See if the site lets you perform proximity searches. On GenealogyBank, for example, entering jacob NEAR/5 higgenbotham in the "include keywords" box find articles with the words jacob and higgenbotham within five words of each other, in any order.
- If your ancestor's last name is also a common word, or he shared a last name with a well-known local individual, see whether the site lets you exclude certain words to weed out irrelevant results.
- Optical character recognition, which is what makes newspapers searchable, isn't foolproof and sometimes misreads words. You may have to browse by navigating to newspapers published around the date of the event you're researching, then flipping through the pages.
